August 5

Abel (+750)

missionary bishop

He was born in Scotland and spent part of his life as a missionary in Lobbes, Belgium.

Biography

He was appointed bishop of Reims. Saint Abel, bishop of Reims and apostle of the Netherlands, a native of Ireland or Scotland, was commissioned by Saint Boniface to evangelize some regions of central Europe that still remained in paganism. He had to fight hard to overcome the crisis and dissensions in which his predecessor Milo had left the diocese of Eims. Threatened by the simoniacs, he had to retire to the monastery of Lobbes, where he continued to be an example of charity and austerity. The monks, eager to be under his spiritual teaching, elected him abbot. Those with this name can choose December 28 or August 5 to celebrate their name day.

Practical advice
