April 23
Adalbert
Bishop and martyr
Born in Bohemia (Libice) around the year 956, he began his studies in Magdeburg, where at Confirmation he received the name Adalbert.
Biography
Upon returning to his homeland, he was ordained a priest and in 983 was chosen as the second bishop of Prague, where he worked tirelessly to eradicate pagan customs. Considering himself insufficiently prepared, he went to Rome and became a monk. Finally, he traveled to Prussia to win souls for Christ; but after being badly received, he was crowned with martyrdom on April 23, 997.
