Adelaide or Alice (931–999)
wife
She is considered the strong woman of Europe with which the first millennium concludes.
Biography
Born in Burgundy, her father engaged her to marry Lothair, king of Italy. This made her suffer a lot, but she died three years after they were married. When Berenguer, the usurper who had poisoned Lothair, wanted to marry her, Adelaida escaped and called Otto I of Germany to her aid, who immediately came, settled accounts with Berenguer and married Adelaida. Upon Otto's death, Adelaida exercised the regency in the name of her son and later in the name of her grandson. For her it was a period of trial and suffering. At the end of his life, he retired to his native Burgundy to devote himself to a life of piety, promoting the good of the Church and helping the poor.
