Augustine Thevarparampil “Kunjachan”, priest (1891–1973)
Priest
Syro-Malabar Catholic priest from India, Augustine Thevarparampil dedicated almost forty years to Dalits, discriminated against by the caste system.
Biography
Of small stature, he was affectionately called "Kunjachan", little father. Fragile health made him return to his parish of Ramapuram, where he discovered the spiritual and social need of those communities. He toured their villages, visited families, taught the faith, and personally prepared thousands for baptism. He called them "my children" and they recognized him as "our priest." His closeness also contributed to his education, dignity and ecclesial participation, overcoming prejudices through constant patience.
Practical advice
Sit down today to talk with someone whom your environment considers inferior and listen to him or her like a brother.
