Alfonso Rodríguez (1533–1617)
widower
He was born in Segovia, Spain and Carlos Pujol writes about him: “Among such a long list of illustrious Jesuits, this is the insignificant Jesuit par excellence, a nobody, an ordinary Rodríguez who, without ceasing to be one, rises to the heights of mysticism.” He entered the Society of Jesus as a widower.
Biography
For forty-six years he was a goalkeeper at the Montesión school in Palma de Mallorca. From such a humble position he devoted himself to a profound life of piety and was able to channel vocations as powerful as that of Saint Peter Claver. He is represented with a key and a rosary in his hand.
