Alonso de Orozco (1500–1591)
Augustinian priest
Spanish Augustinian, preacher and spiritual writer, Alonso de Orozco combined court service with an austere life close to the poor.
Biography
Trained in Salamanca, he entered the Order after listening to Saint Thomas of Villanueva and was ordained in 1527. As a royal preacher in Madrid he kept a simple cell, visited hospitals and prisons and dedicated his income to the needy. He wrote numerous works of spirituality in accessible language and founded religious communities. His influence did not come from courtly power, but from prayer, humility and love for those who suffered.
Practical advice
Visit someone who is sick or confined today and offer a calm presence rather than many explanations.
