Guardian Angels

Memorial

Providence has determined for each of us the race we must follow, the place in the Eternal Kingdom that we must conquer.

Biography

"Behold, says the Lord, I am sending my angel, who will walk before you, protect you, and bring you into the place that I have prepared for you." The guardian angels make us know the Truth, the virtue, the solid and true good, and they lead us to it. When we feel holy inspirations or some inclination to detach ourselves from creatures to surrender to God, we undoubtedly receive good advice from our charitable guide. Nothing more ingenious than his zeal for our sanctification. Sometimes he proposes to us the example of Jesus Christ, or of the saints whose character is more related to ours; Others, it paints us the brevity of life, the moment of death, eternity. Other times, it offers our sight the beauties of virtue, the charms of peace, the fruit of a good conscience; the crowns promised to constant fidelity. Our treatment with our Guardian Angel must have a friendly character, which simultaneously recognizes his superiority in nature and grace. Although its presence is less sensitive than that of a friend of Earth, its effectiveness is much greater. Their advice and suggestions come from God and penetrate deeper than the human voice. And, at the same time, his ability to hear and understand us is far superior to that of the most faithful friend; not only because his permanence at our side is continuous, but because he enters deeper into our intentions, desires and requests. The Angel can reach our imagination directly - without any words - raising images, memories, impressions that show us the path to follow. We will never feel alone if we get used to treating that faithful and generous friend, with whom we can converse familiarly. He, furthermore, joins his prayer to ours and presents it to God. It is necessary, however, that we mentally speak to him, because he cannot penetrate our understanding as God does. And then, he will be able to deduce from within us more than we ourselves are capable of. "We cannot expect the Angels to obey us... But we have the absolute certainty that the holy Angels always hear us," said Blessed Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. Today can be a day to reaffirm our devotion to the Guardian Angel, since the need we have for him is great. Let us seek strength in him in the ordinary ascetic struggle, and help to kindle the flames of the Love of God in our hearts.

Practical advice
