Antonia María Verna, founder (1773–1838)
Founding Educator
Founder of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea, Antonia María Verna persevered for decades to educate children and care for the sick free of charge.
Biography
Born into a peasant family, as a teenager she gathered the little ones together while their parents worked and taught them catechism and prayer. After taking a private vow of virginity, she trained as a teacher and gathered other young women to serve the poor and sick. The new work suffered civil obstacles, merger attempts and repeated delays. She protected her charisma with humility, prudence and trust in Providence until she obtained recognition.
