Arnulf of Soissons (+1087)

Bishop

He was born in Tydenghen, Flanders into a family of noble origin, and during his youth he was forced to knight himself.

Biography

He served various princes for ten years and brilliantly took part in several battles. At the age of thirty he was able to follow his true vocation, entering the abbey of Saint Medard in Soissons. Despite his humility and little desire to appear, the council of Meaux ordered him to replace the bishop of Soissons, and he was later sent by the Pope to a diplomatic mission in Flanders. He was so successful as a diplomat that they no longer let him return to France and they built him a monastery in Oudenbourg. The saint filled this monastery with good religious and there he ended his days.
