December 4
Barbara (2nd century)
Martyr
She was a convert to Christianity and the daughter of a man with a tremendous genius called Dioscoro.
Biography
Since she did not want to believe in her father's pagan idols, he locked her in a castle, to which he had ordered two windows to be installed. The saint ordered the workers to add a third window to remember the Three Divine Persons of the Holy Trinity, which angered her father even more. Dioscoro, since his daughter would not agree to marry any pagan, allowed her to be martyred and have her head cut off with a sword. Ancient tradition says that when Dioscorus was coming down from the mountain where his daughter had been killed, lightning struck him and killed him. That is why people pray to Saint Barbara to be free from lightning when there is a storm.
