Benedict the Moor (1526–1589)
Hermit
The son of Africans who had been enslaved, Benedict was born free in Sicily and was mocked for the color of his skin.
Biography
He worked as a shepherd and shared his earnings with the poor; Later he entered a community of hermits and, when this was dissolved, among the Franciscans of Palermo. Although he could not read or write, his spiritual wisdom led the friars to elect him superior and master of novices. Later he returned with pleasure to kitchen service.
