Bernardo María de Jesús, priest (1831–1911)
Passionist missionary priest
Passionist priest and superior general, Bernardo María de Jesús renewed and expanded his congregation in a time of serious changes for the Church.
Biography
Born César Silvestrelli in Rome, he left a comfortable situation to join the children of Saint Paul of the Cross and shared the novitiate with the future Saint Gabriel of the Dolorosa. As superior he promoted new houses, missions and a solid spiritual formation. He lived with Pius IX through the tensions after the taking of Rome and responded with serene fidelity. He also promoted the construction of the Nettuno sanctuary, where Saint Maria Goretti rests.
