Charles de Foucauld (1858–1916)

Hermit priest

Priest, explorer and hermit of the Sahara, Charles de Foucauld wanted to be a universal brother through silent friendship and the presence of Jesus.

Biography

Orphaned as a child, he lost faith and led a disorderly life before his exploration of Morocco awakened a deep search in him. He converted in 1886, lived among Trappists and Poor Clares and was ordained a priest. He later settled among the Tuareg of Tamanrasset, studied their language and culture and welcomed everyone without seeking privileges. He died during an assault in 1916, after having offered his life for his neighbors.

Practical advice

Approach a person distant from the faith today with respect and offer friendship rather than arguments.
