Biography
Linus and Cletus, predecessors of Clement, have not been remembered for the history of their pontificates. Clement, on the other hand, is a figure of the first magnitude as Peter's successor. Saint Irenaeus relates: "Clement had personally seen the apostles and heard with his own ears their preaching." For this reason, in the letter he wrote to the Corinthians, around the year 95, he exhorted them to unity, movingly evoking the memory of the apostles Peter and Paul.
