Cleopas
Disciple of the Lord
The Roman Martyrology records it in these words: “Commemoration of Saint Cleopas, disciple of the Lord.
Biography
His heart, together with that of the other traveling companion, burned when Christ appeared to them on the road on the evening of Easter and explained the Scriptures. Later, in the house of Cleopas at Emmaus, they recognized the Savior in the breaking of the bread.”
The name Cleopas appears twice in the Gospels. Once in Saint Luke, as we have seen, and again in Saint John. “Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene,” the Gospel recounts (Jn 19:25).
Practical advice
Read the Emmaus account slowly today and ask Christ to teach you to recognize him in Scripture and in the Eucharist.
