Clotilde

Bishop

(+470-545) Clotilde, princess of Lyon, France married Clovis, king of the Franks.

Biography

She could not have found a more bloodthirsty husband: he killed the members of her family and the Frankish chiefs who supported them. However, Clotilde was preparing him for his conversion, helped by some bishops. The King authorized her to have her children baptized. When the Germans invaded his kingdom, seeing the battle of Tobiac lost, the king shouted: “God of Clotilde, if you give me victory, I will become a Christian!” And he won. Weeks later he received baptism in Reims along with three thousand warriors. Frankish Gaul had officially become Christian. However, when Clotilde became a widow, she had to suffer great hardships with her children: her daughter married an Arian, and two of her sons gouged out the eyes of her brother Clodomir's children in order to prevent them from reigning. Clotilde left Paris and lived the rest of her life in Tours, near the tomb of Saint Martin.
