Conrad of Urach (1175–1227)
Cardinal
He was born in Germany, where he became a canon.
Biography
He later became a monk in Villiers, Belgium, and became abbot of Clairvaux and superior general of Citeaux. Elevated to cardinal, he carried out important missions in various countries, and was commissioned to preach the sixth crusade in Germany. All he needed was to be pope and he probably would have been if Conrad had not prevented the Sacred College from voting for him. He died in Rome a few months later saying: “Why wouldn't I have stayed as a monk in Villiers, washing the dinner dishes in my turn?”
Practical advice
In the midst of your ordinary work, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests without seeking applause or recognition.
