December 5
Crispina of Tagara († 304)
Martyr
Her name Crispina means «curly-haired».
Biography
She was born in Tagara, in the province of Africa Proconsularis. A mother with children to feed and educate, she lived in Theveste and possessed considerable wealth. Her virtue shone before everyone, and even during her lifetime people began to call her «the saint». Her health was not strong, but the fortitude of her soul made up for it.
In the time of Diocletian and Maximian, because she refused to sacrifice to idols, she was brought before the proconsul Anullinus. He questioned and threatened her repeatedly, but she remained unshaken. Humiliated by her courage, the proconsul had her tortured until she was exhausted. Enraged, he ordered her beheaded at Theveste on December 5, 304. The acts of her martyrdom are especially eloquent and may be read under Learn more.
