Christopher, Anthony and John (†1527 and 1529)

Martyrs

In 1523, together with Hernán Cortés, the first Franciscan and Dominican evangelizers arrived in Tlaxcalan lands, who had great problems teaching the Gospel, since the adults were very religious and polytheistic and practiced polygamy, especially the caciques.

Biography

In Tlaxcala the Franciscans had the happy idea of summoning the children of the caciques, without excluding the commoner children, to learn the Christian Doctrine, and this is how little CRISTOBAL, born in Tlaxcala around the year 1514 and son of the cacique, embraced the Christian Doctrine with such roots that he began to throw away the idols of his elders, as well as the pulque with which they brutalized themselves. His father beat him, broke his arms and legs, and then burned him at the stake. Cristobalito died only after entrusting himself to God and forgiving his father. His body was found incorrupt a year after being buried. ANTONIO and JUAN were two other children who wanted to accompany the Dominicans to the evangelization of Oaxaca, starting from Tlaxcala. They were born in Tizatlán, Tlaxcala, around the year 1516-17. In a town in Puebla they were caught throwing idols and were beaten to death, after having told the elders that "idols are devils and not gods." These three children are considered the protomartyrs of New Spain, as well as the first fruits of the first evangelization of Mexico, and an example for the children and youth of Tlaxcala and Mexico. They were beatified by H.S. John Paul II, in May 1990.
