Benedictine priest
He was born in Villoria, a small town in Burgos, Spain.
Biography
He decided to enter as a Benedictine monk, but was rejected twice. He became a disciple of Saint Gregory Ostiense and although he was never a priest or monk, he dedicated his life to the service of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. To facilitate this journey, he had the old Roman road repaired, a hospital built and even a bridge over the Oja River built. The Rioja town that he founded, and of which he is the patron, bears his name. He is the patron saint of civil engineers and gerontologists.
