October 13
Edward (1004–1066)
Founder
This king of England was very popular and loved for his qualities of piety and kindness and for being so peace-loving.
Biography
He was exiled to Normandy at the age of ten and could not return to England and access the throne until he was already 40 years old. He immediately reduced taxes and a large part of these went to helping the poorest. He was the founder of Westminster Abbey and his remains rest there. An author of his time says of him: "He was so kind that he never humiliated even the last of his servants with his words. He was especially generous with the poor and emigrants, and he helped the monks a lot. Even when he was on vacation and dedicated to hunting, not a single day did he fail to attend holy mass. He was tall, majestic, with a rosy face and white hair. His mere presence inspired affection and respect."
