Edwiges or Hedwigs (1174–1243)

She was born in Bavaria, Germany, and was the sister of Saint Gertrude and aunt of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.

Biography

She married Duke Henry of Silesia, in Poland, and on her advice, her husband founded several convents. After she became a widow, Hedwig had to work and travel a lot to ensure that her three sons had peace among themselves, as they disputed the dukedom. The long years of her old age were spent founding convents and helping the poor. He was very penitent and lived in complete poverty, since he distributed everything among the needy. She is a very beloved saint in Poland.
