Eleutherius (6th century)

Abbot

This saint was a great friend of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, who tells us that he was Eleuterio, abbot of the monastery of Saint Mark, "of such virtue that with his prayers he raised a dead man." This holy Pope also tells us that through his intercession he himself was cured of a serious illness.

Biography

But perhaps what makes this saint closer to us is a weakness, a moment of weakness that Eleuterio had. Certain nuns had entrusted him with the custody of a child tormented by the devil, and since after many days he did not manifest himself, the abbot commented to his monks that the devil was making fun of those good nuns, but that he did not dare to deal with them now. Immediately the demon took possession of the child again, and Eleuterio understood that there had been vainglory in his words. He acknowledged his guilt, wept bitterly and asked the entire monastery to pray for the child and do penance.

Practical advice

When you begin your work, prepare well for a conversation in which you must guide someone, remembering that holiness is built in the ordinary.
