Biography

A Mexican Augustinian priest of peasant origin, Elías del Socorro Nieves was parish priest of La Cañada during the religious persecution. When the government ordered priests to leave rural areas, he decided to remain hidden in a cave to continue bringing the sacraments and material help to his faithful. Discovered and captured, he was taken to the place of execution. Before dying he forgave and blessed the soldiers, and distributed their belongings among them. His martyrdom showed the fidelity of a shepherd who did not want to seek security by leaving his people alone.
