Scholastica, virgin (+ 547)

Benedictine nun

Saint Scholastica, virgin (+ 547) In the apostolic vocation of the brothers James and John, the Church has seen a sample of Divine Providence, which frequently calls members of the same family to the service of God.

Biography

The twins Benedict and Scholastica, born in the small town of Nursia, Italy, are a typical example of these callings. Not many details of his life are known; However, it is likely that Scholastica led the first community of young girls who praised God through liturgical worship and supported themselves financially through their manual work, founding the first female monastery for Benedictines and imitating her brother Benedict, who had already given life and form to the Benedictines. Both learned virtue and the Christian faith from their parents. His community helped numerous poor families, exploited by some feudal lords of those Italian regions. Although the Benedictine convent of Subiaco today bears the name of Saint Scholastica, the saint's mortal remains were placed next to those of her brother, Saint Benedict, in Montecassino, Italy.

Practical advice
