Stephen Pongracz (1582–1619)
Martyred Jesuit priest
Hungarian Jesuit and martyr of Košice, Stephen Pongracz served as preacher and chaplain of the small Catholic community of that city.
Biography
Trained in the schools of the Society of Jesus, he was sent in 1619 to accompany soldiers and civilians in an environment of strong hostility. Detained with Marcos Križevčanin and Melchor Grodziecki, he refused to abandon the faith. Tortured and left for dead, he was thrown into a well with his companions; He survived for nearly twenty hours, during which he continued praying. He died on September 8, 1619.
