Stephen Wyszyński (1901–1981)

Cardinal and primate of Poland, Stephen Wyszyński defended the freedom of the Church and human dignity against Nazism and communism.
Biography
A priest who studied social doctrine, he served clandestinely during the German occupation and assisted the wounded in the Warsaw uprising. As archbishop and primate he resisted the communist regime's attempts to control the Church, for which he was detained for three years. He promoted a great spiritual renewal entrusted to the Virgin and prepared the way for the mission of Saint John Paul II.
