Blessed Eugénie Smet (1825–1871)

Religious sister and foundress

Eugénie Smet was born in Lille, France, and from childhood showed a deep love for God and for souls.

Biography

She felt called to help the suffering souls in purgatory while serving people in need on earth. With perseverance and trust in Providence, she founded the Helpers of the Holy Souls in Paris. The congregation united prayer for the dead with practical charity toward the poor, the sick, and the forgotten. Taking the religious name Mary of Providence, she taught her sisters to go wherever the needs of the Church and humanity were greatest. Her life was marked by confidence in God, missionary openness, and unobtrusive service.
