Eugene (600–657)
Martyr
Born in Toledo, Spain, of senatorial lineage, he fled his home to take refuge in the monastery of the Holy Martyrs of Zaragoza, seeking tranquility and peace.
Biography
It is his happiest time, because then public responsibilities begin. He was appointed archdeacon of the episcopal basilica and in the year 646, King Chindasvinto asked him to govern the church of Toledo. He resists almost desperately, but he must obey and he will be archbishop of the first Spanish see and, as such, advisor to kings, president of councils and theologian. He is remembered as a great saint, wise man, most illustrious prelate, luminary of Visigothic Spain and to crown all this, a fine Latin poet.
Practical advice
As soon as you have the opportunity, avoid criticism and speak with charity about whoever has hurt you, putting the result in God's hands.
