Biography
Italian Poor Clare and reformer, Eustoquia Esmeralda Calafato firmly defended the poverty and simplicity of Saint Clare. Born in Messina, she overcame family resistance to enter religious life. Later she founded the monastery of Montevergine, where she guided her sisters through example, penance, love of the Crucified and an intense life of prayer. In the midst of economic difficulties and opposition, he kept the community united and faithful to the Rule. Her spiritual motherhood was demanding, but full of charity.
