Evaristo

Pope and martyr

He replaced Clement for 3 years, during his period of exile in the Crimea, in the years 97 to 105.

Biography

He was then elected as the fifth Pope. Out of humility, he resisted with all possible strength to assume the papacy, but on July 27, 108, the Church elected him.

He was born in Palestine to Jewish parents who educated him in Greece, in Antioch.

As the Christian community expanded, it became necessary to subdivide it, in order to govern it better. Thus, the parishes or “tituli” were born, in charge of which elderly priests were appointed, who would later be called cardinals (that is, cardos, pivots of the organization). Perhaps this is the origin of the Sacred College.

He also established a body of seven deacons whose job was to take note of the pope's word, to avoid misunderstandings about what he stated. The whole truth had not yet been perfectly codified, and needed constant rethinking to correct and rectify.

Evaristo was martyred in the year 105 and was buried, according to tradition, next to St. Peter.
