Evodius (1st century)
confessor of faith
He died in Antioch in the second half of the first century.
Biography
Antioch was the third most important city in the Roman Empire, after Rome and Alexandria. A large Jewish colony subsisted there, in a neighborhood on the outskirts, as in so many other capitals of the Roman Empire. Through this area Christianity penetrated the Gentiles. Antioch was the first metropolis in which a Christian community formed by ancient pagans was established and where the disciples received the name of Christians for the first time. Paul and Barnabas carried out their apostolate there after Pentecost. The first Antiochian bishop was Saint Peter. When he left for Rome, Evodio succeeded him. Later the famous Ignatius of Antioch acceded to the bishopric.
