Fabiola (+399)

Secular

He was born and died in Rome.

Biography

His main title of glory is having founded a large hospital in Ostia for the abandoned sick. It was the first establishment of this kind in Europe. Fabiola belonged to the illustrious Fabian family. In her youth she had scandalized the Church by civilly divorcing her husband to marry another. Both husbands died soon and she publicly did penance at Saint John Lateran, where Pope Siricius gave her communion. He then devoted himself to piety and dedicated his immense fortune to good works.
