Philip Benicio (1233–1285)
Founding Servite religious
He was born in Florence, Italy.
Biography
After studying medicine, he joined the newly created Servite Order. He was superior general from the age of thirty-three until his death. He was considered one of the holiest and most capable men of his time. When Pope Clement IV died all signs pointed to Philip as his natural successor. But he hid in the mountains and was not seen again until the danger disappeared. On one occasion he met two prostitutes named Elena and Flora who offered him their services. Felipe spoke to them about the need to abandon their profession, and they were so moved that they promised not to practice it for the next three days. This was the beginning of his conversion. The two ended up being the founders of the Cloistered Servites, a congregation that was established shortly after this episode.
