August 9
Florentino Asensio Barroso (+1936)
Bishop
Born in Villasexmir, Spain, in 1877, Florentino felt an inclination for the priesthood from a young age.
Biography
He entered the Valladolid seminary and was ordained in 1901. In 1936 he was consecrated bishop of Barbastro, precisely when the anarchists took the city. On July 19, the “priest hunt” began and the prison was filled to incredible limits. He was sentenced to death and suffered the worst indignities imaginable. When he was in torment he could be heard saying: “My God, open the doors of heaven to me soon.” And it was heard that he offered his blood for the salvation of his diocese. On May 4, 1997 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
Practical advice
Without seeking recognition, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests and end with a brief thanksgiving.
