Francisco de Borja

Jesuit priest

(1510-1572) Descended from the noble and turbulent Borja lineage, this duke was highly esteemed by Emperor Charles V and held positions of responsibility that he carried out with justice and firmness.

Biography

Their marriage, happy and exemplary, gave them eight children. When he was widowed, he entered the company of Jesus, of which he became the third general in its history. He promoted the work of the Jesuits by creating a multitude of novitiates, schools and missions throughout the world. The best-known anecdote about this saint belongs to his time as a layman. When Francisco had to recognize the body of his admired Empress Isabel and saw the havoc that death had wrought in a few days, he exclaimed: "No more serving my lord or I may die." And at this point the definitive conversion of his soul began.
