January 25
Francisco Zirano (1564–1603)
Martyr
Sardinian Franciscan and martyr, Francisco Zirano traveled to North Africa to rescue enslaved Christians, including a cousin of his.
Biography
He had obtained permission to collect alms and personally carry the ransom, also motivated by the danger that the captives would abandon the faith under torture. Political circumstances frustrated the mission; He was captured, humiliated and sentenced to death in Algiers. He refused to renounce Christ and died flayed on January 25, 1603, forgiving and asking God to enlighten his executioners.
