Fulbert of Chartres (†1028)

Bishop

In addition to mastering biblical exegesis and theology, he had knowledge of physics, astronomy, medicine and music.

Biography

He studied in Reims with the famous Gerbert and when he became Pope Sylvester II, Fulbert followed him to Rome, which was then the capital of corruption and massacres. He served the pontiff with self-sacrifice, never accepting prelatures or money. Upon Sylvester's death, he returned to France, where he was appointed bishop of Chartres. Fulberto taught all his life. Thanks to his lessons, the academies of Chartres became the first intellectual center of France. We have treatises, sermons, liturgical prose and one hundred and twenty-five letters left by him. His good character is clear in his letters: as modest and peaceful as he is firm and brave. Fulbert must also be praised for having been the architect of the famous Reims cathedral. Thanks to King Canute of Denmark, a similar task was able to be completed in a few years.

Practical advice

As an offering to the Lord, attend first to those who need your time most and start again with humility if it doesn't work out for you.
