Gabriel María Allegra (1907–1976)
Franciscan religious missionary
Italian Franciscan, missionary and biblical scholar, Gabriel María Allegra dedicated his life to offering a complete Catholic translation of the Bible in the Chinese language.
Biography
He arrived in China in 1931 and, after years of study and work with specialists, founded the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. The translation, carried out from the original languages, became a fundamental work for Chinese-speaking Catholics. He also promoted ecumenical dialogue with silence, love and prayer. His great intellectual work was born from the mission and a filial devotion to the Immaculate Conception.
