This young Roman canon had refused to take the oath of fidelity that Napoleon I required of the clergy of the Papal States.
Biography
Consequently, he disappeared from circulation to avoid being imprisoned. He reappeared when the imperial adventure ended, and Pius VII commissioned him to preach in central Italy. The theatrical character he gave to his sermons and his thunderous eloquence produced magnificent results. To help him in his apostolic work, he had founded, in 1818, the institute of the Priests of the Precious Blood.
