Gerardo Sasso (1040–1120)
Founding religious
Founder of the Hospitallers of Saint John, he settled in Jerusalem to receive pilgrims and care for the sick without distinction of origin, race or religion.
Biography
In 1099 he organized a fraternity dedicated to protecting the faith and serving the poor; That work was recognized as a religious order in 1113 and gave rise to the Order of Malta. His legacy united the defense of faith with concrete mercy towards those who suffer.
