Gratian (1439–1509)
Augustinian religious
He was born in Mulla, Montenegro, and dedicated himself to fishing and cabotage on the Adriatic coast.
Biography
One Sunday he docked in Venice and entered the Augustinian church of San Cristobal. The sermon impressed him so much that, when the preacher came down from the pulpit, he followed him to the sacristy and asked him to join his Order. Gratian was accepted, returned to Mulla, sold his house and his boat and entered the novitiate of the Augustinians of Monte Ortone. He worked as a community gardener, but also worked as a shoemaker, tailor or bricklayer if the occasion required it. He slept with a stone as a pillow, added three more fasts a week to those of his rule, spent all his free hours before the Blessed Sacrament and used to wear a rough habit that can still be seen in the cathedral of Kotor.
