Gregory Nazianzus (329–390)

Bishop

The life of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus has notable parallels with that of Saint Basil.

Biography

Gregory was also from the region of Cappadocia, and is called Nazianzus because he was born alongside Nazianzus, the same year as Basil. They studied together in Athens; He was also a monk and was later named patriarch of Constantinople. He presided over the First Constantinopolitan Council, which was the Second Ecumenical Council. In it the divinity of the Holy Spirit was defined, against Macedonian, and the Creed of the Mass, called Niceno-Constantinopolitan, was proclaimed. Their lives, in addition to being parallel, are also complementary. Basilio is more active and enterprising. Gregorio had a more marked love for study, poetry and prayer. That is why he resigns from his headquarters and returns to his hometown, to dedicate himself above all to prayer and his theological writings, far from the madding crowd. He died in 389, ten years after Basil. He was called "the theologian" for his rich doctrine and eloquence.
