Biography
Athenian. Martyr. Elected in 136, he died in 140. He determined several powers of the clergy and defined the degrees of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. He instituted godfather and godmother in the baptism of newborns to guide them in the Christian life and decreed that churches be consecrated.
