Hilary of Arles (400–449)

Bishop

A man of letters, with easy and brilliant speech, he did not surrender without a fight to the life of renunciation and sacrifice that his relative Saint Honorato, Abbot of Lérins, proposed to embrace when he was trying to convince him while he was passing through Burgundy.

Biography

He succeeded his relative as second abbot when Honoratus was appointed bishop of Arles, and then also succeeded him in the episcopal chair, when he was not yet thirty years old. He was a memorable bishop who used to walk around his diocese barefoot, even when it snowed, who preached for hours and hours to the wise and the ignorant, wanting everyone to share the treasure of his faith. He was tender and compassionate with sinners and harsh to the point of public and risky denunciation with great people. It was said about him that he was very dedicated in everything, but what he worked the most in was charity with others.

Practical advice

Trusting in God's grace, attend first to those who need your time most and offer that effort for someone who needs help.
