October 3
Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve, bishop and martyr (1916–1989)
martyr bishop
First bishop of Arauca and Colombian martyr, Jesús Emilio Jaramillo evangelized a region hit by poverty, violence and abandonment.
Biography
Member of the Institute of Foreign Missions of Yarumal, he trained missionaries and since 1970 guided the Church of Arauca. He created parishes, promoted the education of peasants and organized pastoral care for indigenous peoples. He clearly denounced injustices and defended human dignity without linking the Gospel to any armed ideology. Kidnapped by guerrillas, he was murdered on October 2, 1989. His blood sealed the fidelity of a shepherd who remained with his people.
