John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church (1801–1890)
Cardinal and doctor of the Church
English cardinal, theologian and doctor of the Church, John Henry Newman sought truth with a conscience formed by prayer and study.
Biography
An Anglican priest and central figure of the Oxford Movement, he investigated the apostolic roots of the Church until requesting full Catholic communion in 1845, a decision that cost him friends, position and prestige. Ordained a Catholic priest, he founded the Oratory of St Philip Neri in Birmingham and served the poor, educated the young and wrote decisive works on faith, conscience and the development of doctrine. His motto was: "The heart speaks to the heart."
Practical advice
Today, honestly study a question of faith that you do not understand and let the truth correct your prejudices.
