Jorge Matulaitis-Matulewicz (1871–1927)
Bishop
Lithuanian bishop and renewal of the Marian Clerics, Jorge Matulaitis worked for reconciliation in a region divided by nationalities, wars and religious tensions.
Biography
Orphaned and sick from a young age, he trained as a priest and professor of theology and sociology. He clandestinely restored his congregation, founded women's institutes and, as bishop of Vilnius, sought to serve Lithuanians, Poles, Belarusians and Jews with justice. He accepted misunderstandings from all sides without renouncing charity. His motto was to conquer evil with good.
Practical advice
Do deliberate good today for someone with whom you disagree and avoid labeling them by their group or position.
