September 25
José Benito Dusmet (1818–1894)
Bishop
He was born in Palermo, Italy to an aristocratic family.
Biography
He was a Benedictine monk and abbot, and many turned to him for advice and spiritual direction. His charity towards the poor was extraordinary and he rushed wherever there was a calamity. He was praised as bishop of Catania and gave himself fully to everyone, but especially to those most in need. He had special care and dedication for the priests, and promoted parish life with great intensity. Despite his opposition, he was named cardinal by Pope Leo XIII, but he did not last long in office, as his health rapidly deteriorated and he died two years later. Those who shrouded him did not find a single piece of clothing in the closet to change his clothes. He had given everything for the poor, even his own breastplate and ring. His people mourned him as a good father and venerated him as a saint. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988.
