José Girotti, martyr (1905–1945)
Martyr
Italian Dominican and renowned professor of Sacred Scripture, José Girotti combined biblical study with concrete charity towards the poor and the elderly.
Biography
During the Nazi occupation he organized hiding places, documents and escape routes for numerous persecuted Jews. He was arrested in 1944 and deported to the Dachau concentration camp, where he continued to comfort and help other prisoners. Sick and exhausted, he died in the camp infirmary, probably from a lethal injection. Israel recognized him as Righteous Among the Nations.
